I want to put in a bathroom in the basement. The toilet and shower will be lower than the rest of the sewer system. Can the sewer pipes run to a higher elevation and still work?

Two of the truisms of the plumbing trade are; Water runs downhill and payday is on Friday. Therefore you cannot put a bathroom below the level of the sewer without installing a pump lift station.

Brad and hj, those two truisms also apply to the septic system business, and a third rule is, “Don’t chew your fingernails!” JWA

Pipefitters only have to remember the second rule since they can pump their stuff uphill.
