Hi. I have just been given a Valliant gas water heater – model MAG model (I think), which is at least 8 years old but never been used. I thought I would be able to use it to replace an old Bosch external instant hot water system but to my totally untrained reading of the manual it seems to be for imternal use only and needs to be flued. I don’t want to go to the expense of installing it if it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Trawling the itnernet hasn’t helped me find info on it – are these types of HWS totally obsolete in Australia? Could anyone offer some advice please? Jill

Would be thinkin that the Valliant brand of heaters was a brans sourced from UK locations as it was down here (NZ) and most certainly if it is as old as you say it is then I would be concerned about installing it even though you say it is still brand new. Yes most English instantaneous water heaters are internal heaters and do require expensive fluing to complete their installation – personally I would look to replacing what you already have with like for like or even looking to change the present unit for an electronic controlled Bosch or Rinnai as these units provide a better flow and temperature control than do the older type diaphram operated water heaters. Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news but I say better to be warned than not at all.

Sorry forgot to answer the important part for you. To establish if the unit is an indoor or outdoor unit a simple test is to look at the top where the flue gases come out if that section has a vertical round flue outlet with nothing covering the top of it then yes it is an indoor model and will require a large diameter flue to be fitted during it’s installation – if not you have an outdoor heater there.
