Someone please help! We rent a home from our parents, who installed a Rheem power vent 2 with elect igntion system. We have all ready completly replaced this heater once, and the serviceman was no help. Our problem is, seemingly randomly the pilot goes off, and water slowly drips from the drain value, this is my sign that soon we will be out of hot water. If i turn the electric ignition switch off then back on, I hear the pilot relighting and the the tank is fine until the next time. Seems to happen 2-3 times a week, any suggestions?

Most of the Rheem water heaters with electric connections use a sophisticated electronic module to control both the spark and operation of the heater. In simple terms no power to the heater equalls no spark, therefore no hot water. Most of these control modules have an indicator lamp in them that will tell any service person familiar with the product the likely fault depending on the number of times or how the lamp flashes on and off.
It is possible that all the problem you have lies simply with a partically blocked pilot light burner which ehen cleaned will allow a constant flow of gas to the safety system and allow the main burner to cycle on and off as is should.
In any count it is always best to get the services of an approved gasfitter who knows the product or the service agent in your area to attand to any gas fault.

Opps forgot – you may also have a faulty thermostat controlling the water heater which will if the temperature exceeds the set temperature lock the pilot light off as one of it’s safety features and by turning the power off then on again you are in fact resetting the controls again until next time.
