Thanks for the response, I could not post a follow-up, the system kept telling me it was “incomplete”, so I have to do a new posting. Anyway: Can I just insulate the wall instead? I know this won’t cure the problem, but will it at least cover it up so I don’t have to go doing too much damage to the wall? I read another posting here where somebody wanted to try that for a similar problem. Also, is it normal for the thermal expansion to continue on for about 45 minutes after the sink is being used–it’s not as loud, or frequent, but it does continue to make a quick thump or popping noise. Thanks again

Yes. You can insulate the wall instead of trying to create a larger opening for the pipe.
Yes. It can last that long. It is expanding, then slowly contracting back to its original dimension.
This is a very annoying problem for many people with PVC piping in thier homes.
This could also be caused by a shim of wood used by the plumber at time of install to properly set pipe initially when the piping was glued together. If that is the case and is no longer needed for support, then you might be able to remove the shim that is causing this noise.
Be sure that you can view the total length of pipe though to make sure that the shim doesn’t hold the pipe in place for proper fall, if you pull it out, you could instantly throw a belly or drop in pipe, and thus cause drainage problems.
