        If the water softner is not working properly could that cause the pump to kick on and off more often. Is there anything about the softner I could check or do to see what the problem could be with the softner?

          Most softners have a bypass on the control head.I would put the softner in bypass and see if the pump stops .I take it the pump you are referring to is your well pump,right?
