A septic system gets pumped out depending on amount of bathrooms and current use. A proper running system will need to get pumped every couple years. As a system ages and becomes less effecient it may need pumping more often. Keep in mind that the pumping companys have a habit of vacuuming only one holding tank leaving the others full this will allow them to get back to your house quicker and by taking only the liquid the disposable fee is considerably less. Of course this leaves the solids behind and thus your liquid tank fills up quickly. There are at least three sometimes four tanks before the system leaches. The attic fan has me thinking you have a cracked vent pipe or maybe a clamp that is broken on the vent pipe that goes through the attic. A licensed Pluming Contractor should be able to locate that source of odor. Chemicals, although have their place in septic system maintenance, are not necessarily the answer to your current situation. Good Luck.
