My water heater is installed in the attic. I noticed a clanking sound coming from the attic some time back. The sound starts out low and keeps getting louder until theres a big sprung. It sounds like sheet metal on a spring that keeps flapping until it finally seats itself. I suspect the water heater because this sound is only heard after flowing hot water. Could this be something malfunctioning within the water heater?

When the water heater comes on it can create steam bubbles under the sediment and make all sorts of horrible banging and popping noises. You might try flushing the sediment out. Lots of information about water heaters on my website in the water heater area.
