When our house was built in 1979 the plumbers put the trap under the shower drain (stall shower). Several years ago we started noticing a stinky sewer odor coming out of the shower drain during the summer months on hot/humid days. We always put a rubber drainstop over it after we shower to keep the smell down. I want to get a plumber to find the problem but I am so afraid it will involve a MAJOR job. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect and what might be causing this problem and what could be done? Thank you very much.

Adele: I too, have a similar problem. However, I am not certain whether my odor is sewer, but there is a distinct odor. What I suspect for my case (still need to verify this) is an improper installation of the shower drain. Even though the P-trap contains water, I suspect that the drian does not have enough drop to drain the line. My shower drain line is linked to my commode. I suspect that when I flush, some of the waste matter goes up the drain to the shower. Not enough to exit the shower drain. Just enough to turn the water a fowl smell. What do the experts think of this theory? Thanks for all your help.

I am not a plumber, I claen septic tanks but I think you have hit a point here… I would sugest a dose of bleach and maybe some pipe build up remover. Use the build up remover first, then dose the trap with bleach once in a while and see what happenes…..Any one else got a better Idea???
