The agitator never disengages. During the spin cycle, cloths get tangled in the agitator because the agitator does not engage. What can I do about this?

if this is a washer made before 1986 then it is the wig-wag its the silonoid that ingages your transmisson from spin to agitate, call anyone that works of whirlpool they can help the washer is made by them..
