We are renting a flat just outside of London. The attic/loft contains two open (no lid/cover) cisterns that supply water to most of the sinks, toilets and tubs on the lower floors. Question: What cistern maintenance/cleaning must be done to prevent accumulation of bacteria and an unsafe situation? At what frequency should appropriate maintenance be completed?

Frank, In NSW Ausralia potable water storage tanks shall be cleaned and disinfected evey two years. The tanks should have lids to keep vermin, dust etc out of the water. There are proceedures to clean and disinfect the tank which are too indepth to list here. Maybe the same info can be gained from the water authorities codes in London. My wife and I are flying to London to visit our son for a month. Maybe we will not drink the water. Just go to the nearest pub and drink beer or scotch with soda. Mossy
