venting a water heater

I would like to install a nat. gas water heater (to replace an electric) and vent it through a window to the outside. I dont want to spend the extra $150 for a power vent. Do I need a certain length (height) to cause good draft up the double wall pipe I plan on installing? It is too far to the chimney.

: Dave, We just bought some flooring and I went for the cheap stuff. Already it is showing scratches and my wife hates me. This I can handle but even I would spend the $150 and make sure that my water heater was vented properly. Otherwise, but a good carbon-monoxide detector because it will save your life! Should you decide to vent this out the window you will still need to run a class B chimney through your soffits and above your roof peak. Thsi will probably cast you the same as a power vent and will look hokey. Good luck

If the double wall pipe has a large amount exposed on the outside of the building, the cool air will often be sufficient to prevent the hot flue gases from creating a natural draft. When that happens, the gases spill out of the draft diverter into the room, and that can kill you. Even the cheapest funeral, especially for several people, is more than $150.00, and so is the least expensive hospital bill. How much space does it require from building materials? I dont care if it costs $150 – I just need a solution. Please help!
