We just bought a 5 year old house in Vermont. It has a septic system. But now, after we do a load of laundry or use the dishwasher (both of which are on the main floor of the house) we get a terrible smell in the basement. One plumber thought it might be sewer gas. The smells leaks up into the main part of the house. It smells terrible. One plumber told me to tighten down the toilets cause the seals might be loose. I havent tried it yet, but there are no toilets in the basement where the smell originates. How can I be sure its sewer gas, and not something else? If it is sewer gas, how can we find out if it is a trap problem or a cracked pipe problem?
