Furnace pilot wont light or come on

After using my upright gas furnace for past month it didnt come on last night. I noted the pilot had gone out and tried to relight it. The pilot will not light at all. Normally I can hear the gas flowing when I push the button to light the pilot but now no sound at all. Even if the thermocouple has gone bad I thought the pilot would light? Also, I turned the gas control to on position to light the main burner directly but no gas there either. My gas drier and space heater are working normal. Anything else I should check before replacing the themocouple? (I enjoy reading this board)

I called a service company and they replaced the Thermocouple and the furnace is working normally now. I sure thought the pilot and main burners would still light even with a bad thermocouple but I guess not???
