40 gal. shorty, two elements. no hot water, it went from long lasting straight to nothing. how do i check for power, i have a meter, i placed it on the wires going to the thermostat but there was no reading. is that normal ? would a bad thermostat stop power, or should i still get a reading? help !!!!!

Clay: Make sure that the circuit breaker in the electrical panel hasnt tripped before getting into a repair session with the heater. Check for 240 volts at the top of the upper thermostat (above the ECO, that little red button) if youve got juice there, check for 240 volts just below the ECO.If you dont have any power. push the little red reset button. If youve got juice there, check the yellow an blue wires that are connected to the upper element. If you have 240 volts and its not heating the water, replace the element. If your not getting any voltage, replace or adjust the upper thermostat. If the heater cycles off on the ECO ( the energy cut off-the little red button) replace the lower thermostat. Lots of luck..240 Volts can be hazardous to your health……Bud:
