I am a first-time homeowner (25 yr old ranch) and within the first week of living in my house I discovered that both showers (one tub and one stall) leak. I found this by the puddles in the basement. I have reviewed old questions posted here and have become confused about this shower pan thing. Is there a seperate pan below my tub or shower floor that collects any wayward water? In my shower stall, I found some tiles that need to be regrouted and the tub needs new caulk. I did the plastic tarp liner trick (actually thought of it myself before reading it here – impressed myself) and the leaking from the shower stall appears to have stopped. The tub is angled slightly away from the drain (settling, I believe)and water collects on the back deck and run out of the tub area and through the floor. Replacing grout, caulk, and replacing the occasional tile is within my capabilities but a new tub and/or shower is not. have stopped in

The side-walls drain into the pan. A tub would be like a shower pan except for the taller edges which allow the water to be deep enough to bath in. In many cases, a good caulking job will cure the problem. Make sure things like the tub spout and faucet hardware are tightly sealed also. Regards, Terry Love
