: i recently about 2 months ago i installed a BIG BOSS softner at first i used rock salt everything was fine, then i switched to Morton salt pellets now i have a terrible rotten egg smell almost like sewer gas its really bad when i run the hot water. The hot water tastes bad, what is wrong? steve the problem is in your hot water heater if you only smell sulfer in the hot water. soft water makes water a litte corrosive. your anoid in the hot water heater is causing the odor, you could just remove the anode but that may void manufacture warranty. also it was not caused by changeing the salt, it just took time for the anode to desolve
