If the lever is in a roundish plate with two screws it may be a standard trip-lever-plate assembly. They wear out and can be easily replaced. Take the two screws out and carefully withdraw the whole stopper mechanism in an upward direction. Almost any hardware or plumbing store will have a new trip lever plate.
