here in Alaska there are several types of heat tapes, copper tubes for down the well situtations, a fairly new one using thermo plastic that wraps around the pipe (no thermostat) only heats areas that are cold very efficent. also plastic type, looks like tv lead in, dont recomend thisone has a tendcy to burn open and even can cause fires. another type has a thermostat that is placec next to the pipe, if that part of the pipe is cold it works but if not the other end can freeze. hope this helps
