: Ive got a mid-80s electric htr. About a year ago the lower element failed (burned through). I replaced both elements (2500W/240V Rheem). Recently the upper thermostat began sparking across the negative electric supply connector. This trips the upper thermostat. I replaced the upper thermostat, and it still does this. Before I replace the lower thermostat I wanted to know if this indicates a ground in the house line or if this is something to do with the heater itself. The only thing left to replace is the lower thermostat and the tank itself! Any insight would be appreciated. By the way, I keep the breaker off unless I need to heat some water; then I make sure that I turn off the breaker after I am finished with the hot water.obvious this shouldnt happening. recheck your connections. just from the nature of your question, I would say let a professional look at it before you forget one day to turn it off and come home to a pile ashes.
