I would suspect it was the hot water that gave off the smell due to a disintegration of the magnesium anode rod. You can have it removed and then flush the tank and the odor will probably go away unless there is a lot of magnesium that fell of the rod and is laying on the bottom of the tank. I ahd one yesterday that the hot water was absolutely putrid, and we hope that it will clear up with the removal of the rod, otherwise replacing the tank is the only other option.: I am in the process of buying a home and : the home inspector came out and when he : was going through the home he went in the : bathroom and turned on the sink and the : bathtub and there was an odor something : fierce. Now we discovered that there were : no vent stacks coming out of the house at : all. The home inspector said that could be : the problem. Now the home did not smell : of sulfur until that point and it is only in the : bathroom. Could this be because of not : having any vent stacks???
