My initial reaction is that the upper thermostat is being wired improperly. If the upper and lower element wires are being interchanged, the lower element will heat the tank until the upper thermostar switches over. But that one will turn on the upper elements and they will not turn off until the reset button kicks out.: For 5 months now I have had problems with my hot water tank. I have replaced both heating elements 3 times and both thermostats 6 times. After replacing the thermostats, the tank will heat and not get shut off by the themostat. The water gets so hot that it sounds like a coffe perculator and boils overf through the pressure relief overflow. It then eventually shuts down and goes cold. I have had 3 plumbers and 3 electricians look at it and of course everynoe says replace the thermostats? Should I just replace the tank???? I need help.!!!!!
