: I noticed a water spot in the ceiling beneath the upstairs shower. I removed the drain cover to see if I could just caulk around the drain but that isnt the problem. I did see standing water about 12 inches down the drain. I tried to clear it with drain cleaner to no avail. The drain doesnt back up into the shower when the shower is running. Could whatever is causing the water to back up also be causing the leak or is it something more complex (and more expensive).the water youre seeeing is suppose to be there!,thats the water in trap. if you have a tile shower inspect carefully for cracks in tile joints. checked around valve, sometimes water gets behind this area-caulk it. check sust outside shower along edge and floor, another it gets through when getting out wet or door/curtain not closed good.check and caulk these areas and let it dry. then use. if leak continues well then the complex part comes in and you may want to call a good plumber in your area.
