    Sharon: The odor proves that the anode is alive and well inside your heater. When the anode is doing its’ job of protecting the inside of the tank, it emits small amounts of Hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas has an affinity for other minerals or disolved gasses in the water supply. If there is even trace amounts of Sulfur in the water, the Hydrogen will bond with it to form the smelly Hydrogen Sulphide Gas.
    Try opening the hot water side on the bath tub fill valve, and let the water run untill it no longer has an odor and there is no dicolored water coming out. Sometimes that’s all that is needed to solve the problem
