[They are supposed to take the incoming cold water and out it down t at the tanks bottom to be heated. If cracked or broken, they aloow shorting of the cold water over to the hot water outlet.] Then you get about 3 – 5 gallons of hot to warm water before it turns ice cold. I always recommend buying a copper tube, flaring the upper end and drilling a small (1/
hole in the upper end, and installing it in the cold water inlet (after disposing of the cheap plastic remnants of the old one). The copper will last forever in the tank.Now, about the anode you mentioned. Its purpose is to protect the tank from rusting.
