I think you have discovered the cause and the solution. You should use a timer anyway otherwise the heater will be going on and off 24 hours a day, which will increase your fuel bill and shorten the life of the water heater. Run the pump when you get up in the morning and when your are getting ready for supper.: We have a newly constructed home on a slab. We had a hot water recirculating pump and coppertubing installed by the plumber before foundation was poured. He did not insulate around the hot water tubing. We now only have hot water. The cold water is at bast warm unless we disconnect the recirculating pump. We think that the hot and cold water tubes are too close together. Any other ideas. : We have thought about putting a timer on the system so it can cool down so that we may have cold water occaisionally. Does anyone have any ideas how we might can make this work?
