Lisa…The best way to deal with this is to remove the two screws that hold the trip lever plate in place. As gently as possibly grasp the the trip lever assembly with the lift linkage that is attatched to it, and tug on it with enough force to pull it up and out of the over flow pipe. This may require a little patience…wiggle and jiggle it as needed to get it out. Once you have the plunger out the hard part is over. Get some drain cleaner from the neighborhood Home Supply store that is made specifically for clearing this type hair and soap build-up from the drain.
