:Plumbers soil, used in making wiped joints, is a composition of glue, lampblack, and water with a consistency of a thin paste. It is applied with a paint brush to the ends of the pipe to be joined. If the black rubs off, there is too much lampblack. If the soil cracks and falls off when the pipe is bent, there is too much glue.
