we always tried to use new push nipples since the process of assembling the boiler or radiator compresses the nipple and if the new port is not exactly the same as the one the nipple came out of it may slide all the way in without sealing. We used pipe dope as a lubricant which gives an additional layer of protection against minor leaking.
