our hot water heater isnt providing enough hot water for our family. it is a recent problem, the unit was built in 91, and has been problem free till now. the pilot stays lit, the waterpipe and gas connections are all sound, yet we still run out. i turned the thermostat up past midway towards the very hot end of the dial, but still no help. short of replacing the unit, what can we do ? thank you for your help.

Randy…If you have turned up the temperature setting on the water heater, and you still are not getting adequate hot water for your needs, is it possible that you have a sizeable leak in the hot water piping ? I of course dont know the construction of your home, but if it is a slab on grade type building and your water lines are beneath the slab, it is possible that you have a leak below the slab. Have you noticed any hot or warm spots on the floor ? An easy way to determine if this is the case, is to shut off the cold water supply to the water heater for a few minutes, and then turn it back on….if you hear a rush of water going into the tank when you turn it back on, thats a good indication that there is a leak below grade. I would be interested in the outcome of your problem. Happy New Year…………….Bud…. Suncoast Plumbing.. Sunny Florida..
