I have a problem with a True Value – Master Plumber – Reliance 501 – Hot Water heater and I am looking for some technical data refering to same – it is over heating and I would like to check the thermostat and elements but have NO data available here – it is a 1991 model… The unit had been working fine till 2 days ago – when I noticed that the water was VERY hot – worse than usual and then this morning wqe had NO hot water – I hit the reset and it IS heating but I believe I could have a thermostat problem and would like to test it… Thank you…. Kirk:– You have already answered your own question….You do have a faulty thermostat (thats why the reset button on the ECO is tripping). If your water heater is a quick recovery model, replace the lower thermostat first. If it continues to do the same thing, replace the upper thermostat. Be sure to wire it exactly as it is now..Red and Black wires to the lower thermostat and element…Blue and Yellow to the upper element. The cost of the lower thermostat is far less ($6-$8) than the time and energy you will waste trying to test it on a bench set-up for function and accuracy. This is a very common failure, and an easy fix….Lots of luck…Bud

Please ignore prior message from Kirk, which was copied to my follow up. My problem is as follows: I have a Reliance 501 Water Heater which was installed when we purchased our home in 7/98. The heater is less than 5 years old and lately does not generate sufficient hot water. I would like to know what the problem may be, who do I call to fix it and how do I get it covered under the 5 year warranty. Thanks. Lou Esbin
