water heater noise

: whenever a water supply is used (ie. shower or washing machine ) the water heater makes a gurgling sound. any help would be greatly appreciated .: thanksWhat you maybe hearing is the COLD incoming water cooling the HOT tank and the thermo contraction sounds of the metal. Depending on the age and maker of the tank you could also have a DIP Tibe failure. AO Smith for example. You could try to install a return hot water line to temper the incoming water so the coefficient of expansion per degree of temperature is not so severe. Think about how hot the bottom of a tank is then thermo shocking it with in coming cold water. Lousey system wouldnt you say? Sylvan
