There is a continous humming sound coming from the boiler (hot water heat). Over a period of 15 to 20 minutes it goes from a low volume hum to a very irritating volume. Then, something happens that reduces the volume back down to nearly nothing, and the cycle starts over again. Ive listened to various elements of the system with the old metal-rod to the ear trick, but cant pin-point the culprit. It almost sounds like a pressure build-up, but I cant pin it down. Any information that will help solve this problem will be appreciated.

A lot of 24 volt transformers have a hum. This is the small electrical unit that tranforms 120 volts down to 24 for the control wiring. You could either have a completely separate transformer mounted to the boiler or one built into an operating control. This is a very hard thing to describe what it looks like without knowing the boiler.

I know exactly what youre talking about, Jeff, and I know where the little guy is too. Right on the boiler sheet metal. And yes, it is humming. (THANKS!) Im not sure that its the sole culprit, but it certainly is contributing. You ever hear of anyone taking the entire control panel out and mounting it to a block wall? The old boilers xformer was wall-mounted, and was quiet as a mouse.thanks for you help! Robert: A lot of 24 volt transformers have a hum.
