What would cause a toilet bowl to drain over a period of time. When flushed, the bowl will refills to the proper level. After about 5 hours the bowl is almost empty.

I have seen this once in eight years. The toilet may be broken, but in a place where the water will go from the bowl, down the drain. You can test this by removing the toilet and filling it partially with water. That way its easy to see where the water goes.

Improper venting is supposed to be able to change the water level in the bowl. There can be a crack inside the toilet that lets the p-trap drain out. And certain things (like dental floss) can get caught in the toilet trap in such a way that allows the water in the trap to wick out.
