Water Heater

I am going to be replacing a gravity feed hot water tank with a mains pressure one. Is there a need to remove the old tank from the roof. I am loathed to do this as I have extremmely ornate ceilings and would be devistated if they were damaged. I also have very old fragile/brittle roof tiles. Thanks for your suggestions in advance.
