Electric Hot Water Heaters

: I am wanting to know the best rated electric water heaters (brands) that are insulated for residing in a garage. What is the average price for installation as well and what should I look for warranty wise.HELLO, RENE!!Looks like everyone is shopping for a new heater. But we can slow down that problem, if not stop it. Ready? First buy a brand for which you can easily loosen the primary ANODE. It is located at the top of the heater, looking like a large 1 1/16 nut. Have the installer loosen it, then re-tighten just snug enuf to not leak. (You are going to want to unscrew this later to extend your heaters life). Now, purchase a SECONDARY ANODE and have installer install it in the HOT WATER OUTLET opening (unscrew the nipple installed at the factory and merely screw in the secondary anode — two minutes!) Few plumbers know about this, and fewer WANT to know about it — but insist. Also, dont let the installer use teflon tape on the fitting — tape doesnt allow a battery to operate very well! Now write the installation date on the front of the heater (which now has a lifetime of TEN years rather than the FIVE stated in your warranty). At the end of ten years, remove the PRIMARY anode and check it. If 5 – 6 of iron core wire are exposed, replace ONLY the primary anode for an additional five years of life. If in good condition, merely replace it and check it again in one year. Now……you wont have to replace your water heater again! [Unless you start feeling sorry for the plumbers in your area.] GOOD LUCK!!!!! DARREL

For a little extra money, Bradford White extends the warranty on the six year to a ten year.

Im having troubles w/a Bradford White 50 gal gas HWH. Not enough hot water…the plumber who installed it says he thinks that the pipe supplying the cold water down to the heater has corroded and needs replacement. Does this sound likely?The unit was purchased in Feb 96.THX.

We bought our home new 15-years ago. It had gas hot water heater. The gas unit broke and flooded the den after 4-years. It was under warranty, and was replaced. Today–11-years later, the second gas hot water heater broke and flooded the den. In other homes, we always had electric hot water heaters, and I dont remember having this problem. Is it usual for gas units? Also, does it cost more to heat with an electric unit and are they as efficient?: I am interested on information about tankless, electric hot water heaters.
