I have a well-mclain boiler with four heating zones. The zone valves are honeywell. The system is in its third heating season and I have had to replace two separate zone valves and a third just went bad. They have all been different zone valves. I have been told that they should last up to 20 years. At $50 a pop, its getting frustrating. Why would the valves go bad? Why would they be different valves each time?

Just my opinion but I think Honeywell zone valves are junk. Had lots of problems over the years. Gears strip. The internal rubber balls disintegrate. Spring return slams shut. Not full port (the hole in the middle is much smaller than the pipe size). Only go up to 1 in size. Give me a powered open, powered closed White Rogers anyday. Lots fewer problems.

Maybe all of your valves were from a bad lot. Typically Honeywell zone valves will last for 20 years or more with no maintenance. Maybe they were overheated during installation? Also very high operation temperatures (above 200 F ) might shorten their life. One more problem that would shorten their life would be excessive oxygen in the water. This would occur if you have a leak in the system and are continually making up water. Also a very low or high ph or very hard water might shorten valve life. Did you try going back to the supplier or Honeywell directly with your problem. Good luck. Wayne

The installation of zone valves may be incorrect. I cannot recall the exact specs but the motor cannot be installed facing down. You may just want to read the installation instructions.
