My water hammer problem is interesting in that not only does it happen when a valve (any valve in the house) is closed but also when a valve is opened! Happens like this; open a valve, the pipes hammer and pressure/volume is reduced a bit. Then the hammering stops and pressure/volume is restored. Turn the valve off – even slowly, and the pipes hammer. If I close the water heater inlet valve the pipes do NOT hammer. This, of course leads me to believe there is a problem with the water heater but I simply cant figure out what it might be. I need to add that the heater is at least 7 years old but the problem only recently started. Thanks in advance for any advise!Dan

Most storage type of hot water systems have a none return valve on it. Sounds like either the stop cock or the none return valve are faulty. The innards are bouncing backwards and forwards, creating the hammer

you might try changing the tap washer in the valve with which you turn off the cold water supply to the H.W.S.
