Whenever our toilet is flushed a load gurgling noise comes from the bathtub drain. Several nights ago when we were having a heavy rain, black water actually came up into the bathtub after a flush and then the toilet was slow to fill. There was no water in our cleanout, however the clean out by the sewer was full. The city cleaned it out, but the gurgling noise continues. My husband feels it is not a problem and is against me calling a plumber for a non existent problem. Please help me to understand what might be causing this so that I can make an informed decision. Thank you!

Tell your husband that any time there is a plumbing problem, there is always a potential health problem associated with that.

Sounds like a partial backup in your system that needs to be removed.

The bubbling is caused by air displacement through the drain when water rushes towards the obstruction in the line.

Liquid drain cleaners are a waste of time, rodding the drain with a electric drain cleaning machine from a rental yard is your best defense in addressing this matter.

I dont know how your tub is vented but it sounds like your vent could be clogged up too, have Plumber check it out and cable it out if possible.

Sorry to have not gotten back here sooner, but have been dealing with a family illness. I have relayed your info to my husband and he has promised to check the vent pipe himself this weekend as he has some experience doing that. If that doesn’t do the trick, he has agreed to call in a plumber to have the line rodded. Thank you both so much!
