tonight, when I got home from work, i smelled a faint sewer-type smell in the house. I went to every bath room and down to the basement, and although the smell gets slightly worse in the basement, it does not seem to come from any specific place. What do I do?

Check your floor drains make sure they have water in them and look at pipe and see if it has any bad spots, if you have cast iron look for mushroom areas.

I don’t have any cast iron. The house is about 10 years old, and the basement is finished. I can’t see any water in the floor drains, but I am on public sewer.

Dump a bucket of water in each floor drain, smell around at fins. wall in basement see if you can smell anything.have you any windows open in basement, sometimes wind will blow smell .

Hey art, my brother has the very same problem – every time he has wind – he stinks.

Have a plumber do a smoke test on your plumbing system; this will find the source of your leak.
