Instead of running individual, stack, wet, etc. vents I noticed a small item in the store called an automatic air vent. Are these vents legal and do they work? It is 1 1/4 inch. What would happen if I installed one in a wall that is to be finished and enclosed?

Joseph, think about this for a minute.
Here your connecting a waste or soil line to a sewer pipe with all types of carcinogenic gases and vermin and your depending on a cheap plastic mechanical device to guarantee system integrity and you also are asking if it can be sealed away from inspection.
I DON’T THINK SO.
In my humble opinion
The stumble bums who resort to this type of non professional type of installations are the same mind set who use dresser couplings and fernco fittings and of cheap tricks to get in and get of doing the proper job.
Most of the better codes would fine the plumber who would resort to this type of shoddy work.
What I have read the codes allowing r this junk require it it must be accessible and it is also prone to failure DUH
What else is new when depending on a rubber disc to keep out odors that is subject to drying out Or having a small insect trapped between the closing and opening mode.
The smallest fixture vent I have ever used is 11/2″
Check with your local code officials and to avoid embarrassment use your competitors name.

Sylvan,does the use of fernco fittings include fernco couplings?you can’t tell me you have a problem with that.

Wall, the Fenrco couplings are the first choice of STUMBLE BUMS.
Thankfully NYC will not allow garbage in the building code we leave crap work for unemployable upstate handy men and UNKNOWING DIYERS.
You see Wall the problem with fernco is the bums who use it most lightly cannot read a ruler and depend on a long piece of rubber to make up for their lack of skills.
I happen to like Caulked joints Or Mission Couplings or MJ and even NO HUB couplings.
The Fernco coupling has no stability when used on the horizontal.
Of course thinking like a professional which would you think has a higher tensile strength NO HUB Couplings, OR Rubber with the large space that it can allow do to faulty workmanship.
Why not read the NYC Board of Standards and appeals on approval of materials.
Of course upstate allows ANYTHING and anyone to dabble in plumbing with any type of materials you can imagine.
Yup AAV and Fernco go hand in hand with the unemployables and non skilled folks.
Thankfully the home centers sell this crap so the home owners can do their own damage rather then hiring a BBC to install it.
Think about this Wall, look how OLD the plumbing is in NYC and LOOK at all the FAILURES in the new construction going on where CHEAP short cuts are taking place AMAZING HUH?
Next time pick up a Cast Iron No Hub Fitting and a Fernco fitting and tell me which one you want to risk your families health on?
