Anyone out there have experience with yellow HarveySeal thread pipe sealant for gas? Seems like most people use Rectorseal 5 but Rectorseal 5 “Special” is what is recommended for gas. Thanks.

I have no experience with HarveySeal. But your statement about Rectorseal 5 may be a little misleading. It works fine for natural gas and lpg.
I looked at Rectorseals web site to see what you were talking about. here’s some quotes about the special stuff:

“RectorSeal® No. 5 special pipe thread sealant is a variation of the basic RectorSeal® No. 5 formulation. For use where a low odor sealant with low temperature application is required.”

“RectorSeal® No. 5® Special is especially formulated for use around gas detection equipment.”

Thanks Phil. Harveyseal is a thread sealant sold at home depot specifically for gas. They also sell Rec 5. Lowes only sells Rec 5 and Blue Block. Sounds like you generally use Rec 5 (?). Do you like the tube or liquid stuff best?

Hate to throw a spanner in the works but the best leak free sealant I have used for past 20 or so years on both Natural Gas and Bottled Gas installations and pipework has been “Loctite 529” – never had a leak at all from using this compound. Have also used yellow threadseal tape (PTFE) without any problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Peter. What solvent do you use to clean threads?

Loctitle “M” cleaner Primer I think the number is – it is readily availabe from any Loctitle reseller so you should have no problems getting it – it is a spray form from a can.

I use ProDope for gaslines. If I’m out of that, I’ll use Gasoila soft set. Both work great.

                      Anyone use this?

Great stuff, cleans up without having to throw your clothes away if you get some on ya.

I’ve tried using that yellow teflon gas tape, and it seems to shred easily while tightening up the fittings. A mix of both proves reliable though.

                          LOL

                          Isn’t that the truth.

This stuff has been around for a few years here in the states.

I remember years ago when they used to use the red Gasolia that hardened like glass on the connections.

                          Anyone remember that product?

Can remember a paint like compiund that went hard like glass on threads think the name it went under was “Stag compound” – can also recall it made one hell of a mess if it was spilt anywhere’s – especially on carpets and the like!!!!
Only problem we had and still have when we come accross this stuff is that once the joint has been disturbed the glass like finish cracks and bingo we got ourselves a leak!!!!

Megaloc was recommended to me by a local plumbing supply, and I’ve used it ever since. As Dunbar has said, it cleans up much easier than the yellow Rectorseal and it’s so far just as effective, and easier to spread.
I’ve also been using the yellow and pink teflon gas tapes for smaller jobs with good results on clean threads.

Peter. There is no 529 thread sealant. You probably meant 592. I checked the Loctite website. I have had excellent results with Loctite 567 and use it a lot. It hardens just a little bit and its gapfill is excellent.
