Both my gas furnace and gas hot water heater vent to the chimney in the basement. The asbestos like material (its not asbestos) that surrounds the vent pipes where they go into the chimney is cracking and chipping. I’m not sure what this material is but can I replace it with furnace cement?

          I don’t know why not.

As far as I can tell the only requirement would be that the material you use can withstand the flue temperatures so any fire cement product – even maniseal would attain this requirement.
