We have a gas water heater that produces unreliable amounts of hot water. Some mornings there is enough hot water for 2+ hot showers. Other mornings, there is barely enough for one (fast) warm shower. (About 40 minutes after the “warm” shower, the hot water bounces back so the next person gets a hot shower.) The Gas water heater is about 2 years old. We had the dip tube replaced a few months back for the same problem (but back then we varied between hot water or no hot water at all). When the service man tried to extract the old dip tube, it broke off and is now floating around inside the tank. The pilot seems to stay on without a problem.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Should I just get a new tank? We have a homeowners warranty since we bought the house 8 months ago, but getting a replacement tank out of them is not likely, huh?

If you have had the “diptube” replaced recently then that can be put asside as a possible problem. The most likely cause of your problem is a faulty gas thermostat valve which has a too great a differential between cut in and cut out temperature settings. This would account for the cooler water first thing in the morning and an adequate supply in an hour or so after from someone having a shower etc.
Get a qualified gasfitter to change the thermostat valve and check the cut in and cut out differential settings.
