Our water heater is about two years old, Suddenly no hot water. I checked the pilot was out. Relite it with no problem. and change the
temperature, turns on the main burner. lower the temperature, turns off the main burner. Next day, the pilot was out again. This time
I relite it and watching it. after a while, the fume on the main burner changed from blue to
little yellowish, and main burner out and took the pilot with it. Had a service call this afternoon, the guy said to change the gas valve.
Is there anything else could be wrong. I don’t want to spend $300 and still doesn’t fix the problem. Thanks.By the way, my fireplace had the same problem, but when the main burner out, it didn’t take the
pilot with it.Thanks for your help.

First things first……….. a familiar problem you have there and mostly easy to fix BUT what is with this serviceperson you had call?? He did nothing to effect a repair but advised that the gas valve be changed???? I doubt very much if he or she is worth a grain of salt as a serviceperson.
The changing of the gas valve will not affect a change of the operation of the burners and make the main burner go from blue to yellow!!!!! geez.I would firstly check that the main burner venturi is clean with no lint or foreign particals therein if so get it cleaned out.
Secondly I would service the pilot light assembly to ensure you have sufficient airation and gas for correct combustion.
Thirdly I would check the operating gas pressure at the gas control to ensure everything is working fine.
Lastley I would check if everything else fails that the flue is in fact clear all the way to the terminal including the cylinder baffles.NON of this work should be carried out by a person who is not familiar and suitable qualifed to undertake the same.

utility company checking the gas pressure. but
yet to find a good plumber to do the checking
you recommended. -
