If you read my post in the general plumbing section, you know I am taking some plumbing classes. I have many questions and while I’m pretty sure my instructor in gas hasn’t killed anyone with his work, he’s not real sharp on field work and questions about general stuff.

Why does the instructions on gas control valves say you should not use teflon tape or teflon based pipe dope? Does this also apply to ‘gas teflon tape’? I use it for other connections, but why not for this connection?

Guys’ I really do appreciate the help…

Teflon tape is not recommended for sealing gastight joints in some gas valve assemblies mainly due to it being applied incorrectly and strands of teflon can find their way into the valve seats and solenoid valves preventing them from sealing properly.
Just as hemp does on some water fittings.
Not sure why your tutor is telling you not to use a teflon based liquid or paste sealant unless he is concerned that it too is applied incorrectly as too much can cause it to swarf and that can find it’s way into the valve seats as well.
I have found this problem in the field a number of times.

Maybe your instructer has shares in Loktite?
