Our “new” old house used to have gas light.
That means the pipes are still sticking out of the ceiling. Since we have a hard time to find nice light fixtures, canopies, stems …: Is there a way to cut or cap those pipes? I am NOT planning to do that myself!
I just wonder if it is possible and how expensive it could be?

Several of my accounts have old gas lighting and gas refrigerator lines UNFORTUNTLY the majority of these lines are alive.
What we normally do is open am area around these pipes to check integrity then remove the section sticking out of the wall or ceiling Or floor and plug or cap these lines well inside the area in question then we retest the integrity.
Just make sure your plumber is licensed and heavily insured.

As Sylvan says, some of these systems are still alive. If yours are, check around, you may find a common connection for it that can be disconnected to shut off the entire system. Those lines were usually installed with fittings that had a thin wall and unbanded inlet port. They are very susceptible to leakage over the years and should be discontinued if possible.
