blockage

Ocassionally the water supply from my kitchen faucet stops. It occurs most frequently if the faucet is turned off quickly. It also occurs every time I try to use the sprayer attachment. At first I found that if I started the dishwasher the water would begin to flow from the kitchen faucet again. After a period of time, this fix stopped working. I then found that if I left the malfunctioning kitchen faucet open and turned on the faucet in the bathtub, the water would begin to flow again in the kitchen. If I turned off the bathtub faucet after the water began flowing in the kitchen sink, the pipes would violently knock about four times. Now, I can find no way of getting the water flowing in the kitchen again. Any ideas?
