My hot water heater recently broke results in a loss of 32,000+ gallons of water over a 6
hour period. That amount of water seemed excessive to me. Does that sound possible or could there be
some type of underground pipe leakage as well? -
89 gal per min is definately excessive in a house. Either the meter has been misread, the water heater has been leaking much longer, you have another leak, or this amount also includes your regular usage for the billing period.

Carol to get a flow rate of almost 89 GPM you would have to have a pipe of 2″ dia with a velocity in excess of 8FPS and still that would only give you 80 GPM.
You had better do the following. Shut off all you fixtures and then go back to your meter and see if the gallon arrow is moving. If you dont have agallon movement try marking the cubic ft reading and then watch it . If your losing water double check your toilets as here is where most leaks go undetected. If your toilets are losing water get them repaired right away.
