My name is Jennifer Haslam, and I am the secretary of Central Lockyer Rural Fire Brigade, in Laidley Shire, south east Queensland. We are in the process of extending the fire shed, and including a disability toilet facility. The builder has given us a copy of the Australian Standard regarding the grab rail, but it is confusing. I am looking for the details for the grab rail – ie.. materials used, type of anchorage to besser block wall, height from floor, thickness of pipe used, etc. We have some members who are boilermakers, and can manufacture the rails to the correct specifications. We also have a local supplier who is donating the materials required. Your response to [email protected] would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Go to http://www.google.com and go to search and ask for Details of Bathroom grabbars and they will show you heights and lenghts. In a con. block wall used a good anchor and ours are usualy 2″ thick with centers about 2′ from wall and a 2-1/2″ flange on end with 3 holes in it.

Jennifer. In Australia we have Australian Standards. The Australian Standard for Dissability Access calls up the relevant Standards for Grab rails. Now you may be trying to raise money & in that vein save money, but to have, even proffessional welders manufacture thes grab rails is a effort in futility because the grab rails WILL NOT meet those Standards & you or your committee have not met your duty of care.
Grab rails are readily available from REECE Plumbing Supplies and are not expensive as your Liability insurance will cover them.
